Genetic Information

Understanding Genetic Information in Singapore

As Singapore advances in precision medicine, the integration of genetic data into healthcare raises important ethical concerns. One key issue is genetic information (GI)—unfair treatment based on genetic information such as test results or family medical history.

Why It Matters

Without proper safeguards, individuals may face:
  • Higher insurance premiums
  • Denial of employment opportunities
  • Social stigma
These risks can lead to inequity, psychological distress, and reduced participation in genetic testing or research—ultimately hindering public health and innovation.

Our Research Focus

To ensure the ethical and equitable adoption of precision medicine, our project takes a multi-pronged approach:
  • Baseline Data Collection
Measuring the prevalence of self-reported genetic discrimination in Singapore
  • Qualitative Studies
Exploring concerns that discourage genetic testing
  • Policy Development
Crafting recommendations for legal protections and public engagement strategies

Our Goal

We aim to inform robust safeguards and public education efforts so that the benefits of precision medicine are realised fairly for all in Singapore.
