Essentials of Shared Decision-Making
(SDM e-Modules)

About e-Modules

The Essentials of Shared Decision-Making e-Modules were made with healthcare professionals and clinical ethics committee (CEC) members in mind, for those who would like to integrate SDM into their routine clinical practice and would benefit from the innovative content, real-life scenarios, and evidence-based guidance offered in this course.

Course Structure:

The course consists of three self-paced modules, each consisting of a short video and suggested readings that focus on a specific dimension of SDM. Participants may choose to watch specific videos but we encourage them to complete the full course in sequence to obtain a holistic experience. At the end of the course, learners are invited to reflect on the videos in Module 2 and Module 3.

Mode:

Short online videos (asynchronous/self-directed), each focusing on a specific dimension of SDM, available on Canvas (for select learners – upon request). They may be accessed at learners’ convenience, along with accompanying suggested readings and the final reflections activity.

Overall Duration:

1 Hour 15 Minutes

Continuing Professional Education:

We will be applying for non-mandatory CME/CPE points for doctors, pharmacists, and nurses shortly.

Module 1: A Conversation on Shared Decision-Making

This module introduces the core concepts of SDM through the perspectives of a doctor, a patient, and an ethicist. At the heart of this module is an engaging, conversation-style video where these voices come together to discuss what SDM means in practice, why it matters, and how it can transform the clinician–patient relationship. Their reflections provide a rich foundation for understanding SDM before exploring its application in real-world clinical settings.

Module 2: Shared Decision-Making in Practice – Part 1

This module brings SDM into the clinical setting through a guided, comparative video of a consultation between a healthcare professional, a patient, and their caregiver.
Using a side-by-side approach, the video contrasts a conventional consultation with one that actively incorporates SDM principles. This module helps learners consider practical strategies for integrating SDM into their own clinical interactions.

Module 3: Shared Decision-Making in Practice – Part 2

This module builds on the previous one, featuring a video recording of a real-life consultation between a doctor and a patient.
It provides an authentic glimpse into the barriers and enablers of SDM. Learners are invited to observe how SDM unfolds in a specific clinical context, reflect on how these insights might apply to their own practice, and consider potential ways to adapt or strengthen the approach demonstrated in the video.
