Dr. Naomi Holbeach introduces the “Confidence-Based Surgical Innovation” framework, a structured approach that combines evidence-based medicine with philosophical reasoning to promote responsible surgical innovation. Highlighting the inherent risks of surgical innovation and its impact on patient safety, she identifies challenges in meeting surgeons’ legal and professional obligations, particularly in Australia. The framework addresses uncertainty in decision-making and ensures innovation is implemented responsibly while balancing patient autonomy and safety. By formalizing reasoning around safety and efficacy, Dr. Holbeach provides surgeons with a step-by-step guide to align innovation with their professional duties and promote ethical advancements in patient care.
